Farm Day in Town Field Trip

Every fall, Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County holds a week-long "Farm Day in Town Field Trip." We bring  over 600 first graders from around Mercer County to the CFWMC for the field trip, each year.

The goal of this event is to provide agricultural education to young children who otherwise might never have the opportunity to learn where their food comes from and in tandem, learn healthy food choices. The program consists of the Pennsylvania Mobile Agricultural Science Lab, which is parked outside of the CFWMC for the week of the field trip, and various activities inside the Warehouse.

Current research is showing that obesity levels are highest in low income families because of inadequate nutrition. Many of our local schools have high percentages of children that are food insecure. Partnering with local farmers and the 4-H program for some of the activities provides the expertise of farm education and opportunity for farm to city mentoring.

The entire cost of the field trip is covered by the Community Food Warehouse, through grants from several generous partner organizations, including Red Nose Day, which is run by Comic Relief Inc., a U.S. 501(c)(3) public charity, adn
